Stop Smoking Program

The stop smoking program you are know starting is multi-faceted. You will be aided by a number of well proven techniques. Acupuncture is the foundation of the program, but your attention to all other procedures outlined below will significantly strengthen the already powerful effects of the acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture can effectively eliminate the need to smoke by stimulating nerve pathways associated with nicotine cravings.

Acupuncture can also counteract the discomforting symptoms that are usually associated with nicotine withdrawal including shaking, irritability, insomnia or constipation. The effectiveness of acupuncture, however, can greatly reduce if the patient continues to smoke at all. Therefore, DO NOT SMOKE after your first treatment.

Throw away all cigarettes and remove all ashtrays in your house. Ordinarily going "cold turkey" might be a frightening prospect, but by following the steps outlined below, your chances of successfully becoming a non-smoker without the known pain and discomfort are greatly increased.

1) Make sure that you keep your schedule appointments for treatments. You must receive the full course to receive the most benefit.

2) Should you receive an ear tack during the treatment, stimulate it at least three times each day by pressing on it gently. Stimulate it for at least three minutes each time. A good schedule would be to stimulate the tack before each meal and, in addition to , whenever you experience the urge to smoke. If there are any signs of redness or tenderness in the ear that persist for more than a day after the tack is inserted, remove the tack immediately and call the clinic to set up a time to have the doctor see you!

3) During the course of treatment, cut down your intake of meat, fish, poultry, and eggs. Eat plenty of fruits (except plums, prunes, and cranberries,) vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Popcorn makes a good snack.

4) take the prescribed herbal supplement for restlessness and irritability, (see directions on bottle,) 1 gram of vitamin C every three waking hours, preferably in the calcium ascorbate form daily (Nature's Life is a good brand which has vitamin E, 20 mg. Zinc, and 50 mg B complex.

5) Do not chew gum or eat candy. Do snack on plenty of carrots and celery. Keep them pre-cut and handy for your convince.

6) Make an appointment with your dentist to have your teeth cleaned to remove all traces of nicotine. If you drink coffee make sure that you brush your teeth with a strong toothpaste afterwards.

Besides all the guidelines above, there are more subtle things that you can do to re-enforce your efforts. If someone asks if you quit smoking say, "Yes, I quit smoking!" Positive affirmations, especially said out loud work on many levels, including the unconscious, and are much more effective than the non-committal, "I'm trying to quit."

Beware of times when you usually reach for a cigarette without thinking about it: after a meal, while drinking coffee, when under stress - and realize that you really don't need it and can actually function better without it. Visualize yourself as a non-smoker, feeling more energetic and vital, and proud of accomplishing just what you set out to do.

At the end of the third treatment your body will be effectively detoxified of nicotine, and you will be free of chemically induced cravings. The last acupuncture treatments are important, though, to help deal with the psychological need for a "lift" that takes slightly longer to dissipate.
